You do know that the original golden age Batman had no problem using guns or killing criminals when he had to, don't you?

Golden Age stuff is not canon anymore, and hasn’t been for a long time. The character of Batman has totally changed since then. The Joker’s entire purpose is to tempt Batman to break his no killing rule, to prove that Batman is not his moral superior. Nolan got that. Burton didn’t. Burton used Batman as a delivery system for his uber-gawth vision of Gotham, which may have been fresh at the time, but has since been imitated into impotence. The film is an impressive benchmark in the history of Cinema, particularly the super hero genre, but that doesn’t make it good.
